巴拿馬是中華民國22個邦交國之一，巴國外交部表示，同時邀請台海兩岸領導人出席儀式是因為，「這是運河拓寬後的通航儀式，中國大陸身為運河的重要用戶，必須出席。」
具有戰略價值的巴拿馬運河是全世界最繁忙的航道之一，大陸是此一航道的第二大用戶。
大陸外交部發言人洪磊在被記者詢及、中國大陸國家主席習近平是否會出席儀式且屆時是否可能會見台灣的總統當選人蔡英文時，並未直接回答問題。蔡英文於1月贏得壓倒性勝選後，將於5月20日就任中華民國總統。
洪磊只表示，中國大陸一向以一個中國原則作為處理和發展與世界各國關係的基本前提，而未詳細說明此一問題。1050325
